Dog Potty Training

Regardless of the age, sex or breed of your dog, potty training is a must. As soon as you bring them home, your new puppy should begin a period of dog potty training to learn to use the bathroom outside.

Potty training your dog is not brain surgery, but it is one of the more difficult areas of dog training. Some dogs will bark when they have to pee or poop, but just as many won't, at least not until they go through dog potty training. The way to begin this process is by getting to know your dog and learning their particular body language.

Potty training your dog can take some time, but it really is just several simple steps. First of all, we recommend that you lay down a newspaper near the door you use to take your dog outside. Then if you discover your dog having an accident in the house, rush them over to the newspaper. This will introduce your puppy to the idea that they can go potty on the newspaper.

As we said before, house breaking your dog requires you to spend some time getting to know your dog's behavior. If you see your dog acting restless or sniffing around, that is a good sign that they need to relieve themselves, so immediately take them outside. If you are training a young puppy, it is a good idea to just take them out every hour for a day or two. Once you are outside, give your pup the command you want to use to get them to go to the bathroom, like "do potty" or "go to the toilet."

Every time your dog successfully pees or poops outside, you must shower them with praise as soon as they are finished. Use treats, hugs and positive words to make sure your pooch knows that you are very happy with what they just did. This type of positive reinforcement will encourage your dog to repeat the behavior of going potty outside and will eventually have them asking to go out on their own.

Dog potty training methods vary from person to person, and there are hundreds of books out there to help you in your quest for a potty trained puppy. Just try to remember that your new dog has no idea where the correct place to pee is. It is up to you to teach them. And don't forget to be considerate of your neighbors in the process. If you are potty training your pup in a public place, be sure and clean up after yourself.
